Negative Calorie Foods – Myth or Reality?

Healthy Food – Vegetables

Is there such a thing as a negative calorie food?  Ever  notice that whenever someone goes on a diet, one thing you can see them munching on is a piece of celery?  The reason is that it has been reported time and again that some fruits and vegetables burn more calories while being digested than what they contribute to your diet.  The question is, is there any truth to this assertion?

Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence that verifies that there are any negative calorie foods.  Some of the foods mentioned in many publications and sources online include celery, carrots, broccoli, apples, grapefruit, tomatoes, and other fruits and vegetables.  These are often mentioned because they tend to be low in calories to begin with, and they are more difficult to digest than many other foods.

However, while the foods mentioned are not negative calorie foods, the fact is, they are LOW calorie foods!  And, they contribute important vitamins and minerals to your diet.  In fact, it is a good idea to fill up on fruits and vegetables more than any other food item.

Why?

Fruits and vegetables are generally low in calories.  For instance, the typical candy bar contains about 250 calories.  This equates to two or three sizable servings of fruit (not including dry fruit like raisins), or one big bowl of salad with fresh vegetables such as green pepper, carrots, onions, celery, etc (before the salad dressing of course).  Due to the size of the portions you can eat, you can get filled up relatively quickly.

Fruits and vegetables contain key vitamins and minerals that keep us healthy.  We obtain many of the important vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin C and potassium, from fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables also offer antioxidants that help us fend off disease such as some cancers.

These are just several reasons why it is important to consume fruits and vegetables regularly.  In fact, they should be used as a replacement for many of the common, unhealthy snacks we tend to eat during the course of the day.  A very small bag of potato chips, usually that little two ounce variety, will contain about 150 calories.  Let’s face it, that little bag of chips is not going to satisfy our hunger, and all it really does is jack up our calorie count.  Make a smarter choice and eat a small bag of carrot sticks or eat an apple instead.  Not only will you eat fewer calories, you will get a greater nutritional benefit.
